Are Link Exchanges Harming Your Business?

Many of the top search engine optimization gurus tell us that we must perform link exchanges and lots of them in order to reach the top of the search engines.

But is this still true?

Once if certainly was the case and that was enough to get yourself ranked highly. Nowadays, with the huge rise in Internet usage and websites, the search engines have wised up to this and have complex algorithms for working out your ranking. These are, of course, a closely guarded secret known to a few geeks on the inside, and guessed at by those on the outside.

Many of the search engine optimization experts are now telling us to be wary of link exchanges and to consider the following key points.

1) Link farms – if your link is in what the search engines classify as a link farm then it could harm your ranking. A link farm is typically a site full of links, or a page with a high number of links on them. If the link farm is organised into categories with only a couple of dozen of relevant links per page, then it is less likely to harm your ranking.

2) Irrelevant sites - if your website is focused on children then having link exchanges with pharmacy and gambling sites could well harm your rankings because they are not really relevant. Having links to other children's sites and sites related to children are possible much better for your rankings and will give your website more relevancy.

3) Anchor text – the words that link from another site to yours are actually quite relevant to your search engine ranking. If the words "hello stranger" were a hyperlink to your site then it wouldn't really do you much good unless your site was about strangers. However, if your site was about children and your main keyword was "good parenting" and you had links from other sites with the words "good parenting" being the hyperlink, this will be looked upon favourably by the search engines

When you are exchanging links with anyone, it is worth your while being discerning about the links. Yes, I know you want as many links as possible, but you should consider the relevancy of the links to your visitors, and also what your visitors would think of those links being on your site. If you had a site full of children's games and educational material and then lots of links to adult related sites, how keen do you think parents would be for their children to visit your sites?

Always check out if a site you are linking to has an affiliate program. If they do, then it is worth you signing up for it and putting the affiliate link on your site. Why? Because then when someone follows the link and buys, you get paid for it!

By keeping your link exchanges relevant you can increase your standing in the search engines and give your readers valuable extra resources.

How can I transfer money from PayPal to an Indian account?

PayPal is one of the fastest ways of transferring money from a US bank account to an Indian bank account. Although the exchange rate that you get is not as good as some of the other services, the speed is much better. You can get the money transferred within a week.
Here is what you need to do in order to use PayPal to transfer money to an Indian account.

  1. Add your American Bank Account to your PayPal account: Assuming you are going to transfer funds from an American bank to an Indian bank, the first thing is to add your US bank account to your PayPal account. This can be done by going to: My Account > Profile > Add / Edit Bank Account.
  2. Verify your Bank Account: After you add your bank account, PayPal transfers two small amounts to it. PayPal will then ask you to enter these two amounts in your PayPal account so that they can verify that the bank account belongs to you. PayPal will eventually withdraw the money that it credited to your account, so if you were planning on building a fortune using PayPal verification cents, forget about it.
  3. Add your Indian Bank Account: Next, you will have to add your Indian bank account where you will send the money. In order to do that you need to go to the same path again; My Account > Profile > Add / Edit Bank Account. Select India from the list of countries in the drop-down and enter your bank account details. PayPal needs you to enter the bank IFSC code which can be found on this RBI link.
  4. Add Funds and Withdraw Funds: Once you have the bank accounts set up, you can use the “Add Funds” and “Withdraw” links from “My Account” tab in order to first add money to your PayPal account and then remit it to India.
The initial set up can take some time because of the verification process, but once you are done, the transfer works fairly smoothly. Remember, the exchange rate that you get through PayPal is usually a little lower than what you get from other services, but the speed and security is top notch.

What is a Demat account and how can you open one?

Demat Account in India

What is a Demat Account?

I got an email last week from someone asking about opening a demat account, and in the SBI and IDFC thread you might have noticed that there are several people who don’t have demat accounts, but will have to open one soon because nowadays you need one even to invest in these bond issues.
Let’s start with what a Demat account is, and then we can move on to the several options currently available in India.
My grandpa used to have a black briefcase where he stored all his physical share certificates.
Eventually he dematerialized all his shares and moved them to an electronic briefcase, which is how he described his Demat account, and I think this is quite apt to understand the concept.
A Demat account is like a brief case where you store your shares and bonds electronically.
In India there are two Depositories – NSDL and CSDL – and you can think of these depositories as banks that hold your shares and bonds in electronic form.
A regular investor can’t deal with a depository directly, and you have to deal with their agents which are called Depository Participants (DPs).

There are hundreds of DPs in India, and you can open a demat account with one that suits you in terms of price and convenience. Normally, people open a Demat and a trading account with the same institution as it makes transactions cheaper, and is more convenient to get started as well.
So you could have a trading account and a DP account with SBI or ICICI Direct. It is in fact better to have trading and DP account with the same organization because in those cases you are waived off the DP transaction fees.
Effectively, you are using an agent in the form of a depository participant to avail the services of a depository which are storing your shares and bonds electronically.
There are hundreds of DPs in India, and NSDL provides a very comprehensive list of DPs along with their fees here and here (this data might not be up to date though).

Partial List of Depository Participants in India

If you clicked through the above links to the entire list of DPs then you’ll notice that there are a large number of DPs in India, so for this post I’m trying to create a list which has got some of the better known DP names with only their annual maintenance charges covered.
There are several other charges, but including all of them here will make comparison difficult. I have included a link to the source in this table so you can go check the details there. Since these prices are relatively low – you should think about convenience also, and see if your bank offers demat services, and if you can open one there.

How to open a Demat account?

Once you decide where you want to open your Demat account – contact their representatives, and they will get you started.
You will need the following documentation in order to open a Demat account, so keep this handy while contacting the DP.
Proof of Identity: This includes PAN card, driver’s license, passport, voter card etc.
Proof of Address: This includes the above documents and bank passbooks, identity cards issued by Centre or State governments etc.
Passport size photo
Pan card copy
You will need the following details while opening the demat account:
  • Name of account holder
  • Mailing address
  • Bank account details
  • Guardian details for minors
  • Nomination declarations
  • Standing instructions
When you contact the DP – their agent will let you know if they need any specific documentation, or if you need answers to any other specific questions.
It used to be that only equity investors cared about having a demat account, but with a lot of bond issues coming out in only demat form – I think more and more investors will need to open a demat account, and if you don’t already have one, then do think about spending this four or five hundred bucks per year to take advantage of electronic stock and bond holding.

Practicing The Guitar - Are You Kidding Yourself?

Practicing the guitar is no different than doing anything else to improve other aspects of you life. For example, if you're an athlete do you improve your endurance by driving you car? No, you do it by running or some other form of exercise that builds muscle and cardio vascular endurance.

So it is with the guitar. Be sure that when you sit down to practice that you practice. Avoid the temptation to kid yourself by saying that you were practicing by just holding your guitar of by just playing some familiar tune or chord.

If you really want to improve your level of skill, play some new, challenging selections. Or, use your time to work on some exercises your instructor has given you, even if its working on basic guitar scales and chords. This will truly build your skill when it's time to learn a new tune.

When practicing, avoid distractions such as TV, phone, food and friends. Select a place and time to practice when you won't be disturbed. Ask your family or friends to respect this time and to not disturb you until you have finished.

Be sure that what you are working on is correct. If you have an instructor, ask him or her to critique your practice techniques. If you don't use an instructor, be sure to read any reference materials you have to be sure that what you are practicing is being done right. Practice may make perfect, but perfect practice definitely makes perfect.

Before each practice session, spend a few minutes to decide what you want and need to work on. If you have a plan and work your plan, you stand a much better chance of improving your skills quickly. Just sitting down and making some sounds because you're not sure what to do is just a waste of time.

Remember, you want to learn to play the guitar. So, work on the things that will get you to that point quickly. And, even if you are an accomplished guitar player, you can still improve. That improvement can only come by using good practicing techniques.
